At first glance, the story unfolds as a mystery thriller centred on a series of unexplained murders in a Polish village. Beyond the mystery, however, lies a layered narrative combining poetry, sharp satire and insightful observations of human nature.
At the heart of the story is Janina Duszejko, an eccentric retired teacher who stands alone against injustice and cruelty. Portrayed by acclaimed actress Liia Akhedzhakova, Janina attempts to unravel the mystery behind the killings while helping her equally unconventional friends.
Actress and singer Musia Totibadze takes on the role of Janina’s alter ego, performing songs based on the poetry of William Blake, whose work also inspired the title of the novel and play. The production also features actor Alexander Feklistov.
With mysterious forest creatures, live music and a cast of distinctive characters, the play offers an atmospheric theatrical experience exploring humanity’s responsibility towards the world and the fragility of life.
